Six women will be honored for their business achievements and community service during the 7th Annual Positively Powerful Woman Awards luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Friday, June 20, at the Ritz Carlton-Phoenix.
“I believe all people have the capacity to be positively powerful,” says Dr. Joel P. Martin, author and renowned international trainer, speaker and coach. “Through the awards, I honor women servant leaders making significant impacts on the lives of others. My goal is to empower all people to go for their highest aspirations because of the examples set by these amazing role models.” Dr. Martin is the founder and creator of the annual Positively Powerful Woman Awards program.
Dr. Martin’s personal mission, and the mission of her company, Triad West, Inc., is to transform lives and businesses for the better. “I created the awards program to do just that. Each year, we select women who excel as leaders in service or business through achievements in several areas including education, the arts, STEM, non-profits, philanthropy, the faith community and global businesses.”
The program is a unique, full-day event that combines an inspirational luncheon awards presentation with an afternoon of transformational leadership, personal and professional development. In addition to highlighting the six honorees, this year, the 2014 Positively Powerful Luncheon will announce the program’s 35th award recipient. The mistress of ceremonies for the gala luncheon will be Susan Casper, co-host of ABC15’s Sonoran Living Live. Following the awards luncheon, there will be a chance for luncheon attendees to power network with their fellow guests. Last year, more than 300 individuals attended this inspiring celebration.
We are pleased to announce that, for the second year in row, Ilana Lowery, Editor-in-Chief of the Phoenix Business Journal, will moderate the 2014 Award Recipients’ Panel Discussion to kick off the Transforming Life Summit. The Panel Discussion is a program favorite and Lowery brings it to life with questions that are both thought provoking and entertaining. Then, Dr. Martin will deliver her keynote address, “BE The LEADER You Want to See in the World: Access Your Ability to Transform So You OWN Your Dreams With Confidence.” Following that will be two equally dynamic speakers, international body language expert Linda Clemons and Dr. Christa Thompson, emotional intelligence specialist.
Each year, the luncheon highlights an up and coming non-profit. This year, we will feature Severson Sisters and their Super Girl program. The Super Girl Program gives girls the skills and tools necessary to serve as positive role models in the community. The program focuses on three elements: self-esteem enhancing tools, tips on how to develop and maintain healthy relationships with their peers and action plans on how to handle bullying situations in life.
The 2014 honorees are:
Global Leadership Award: Sandra Yancey, Founder and CEO, eWomenNetwork, Inc.
In 2000, from a room above the garage of her Dallas, Texas suburban home, Yancey boot-strapped her way to create one of the largest business networking organizations in North America. Today, eWomenNetwork is a multi-million dollar enterprise in six countries with 118 chapters that helps thousands of women grow their businesses. The organization produces more than 1,000 events each year, including one of the largest four-day International Women’s Business Conference in North America. A CNN American Hero, her eWomenNetwork Foundation has awarded cash grants to 94 non-profit organizations and scholarships to 132 emerging female leaders of tomorrow.
Philanthropic Leadership Award: Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, Executive Director of ASU Gammage and Assistant Vice President for Cultural Affairs
Colleen Jennings-Roggensack has been presenting the performing arts for the past 35 years. In her current role, she has administrative and fiscal responsibility for two cultural facilities, with additional responsibility for Sun Devil Stadium and Wells Fargo Arena for non-athletic activities including concerts as well as commencement and convocation exercises. ASU Gammage has become a national leader with innovative programs that change lives. Their community partnerships include One Fun Day New Song Center for Grieving Children, Journey Home arts residency program that empowers incarcerated women, Art of Me with Greater Phoenix Youth at Risk, New Carpa Theater, International Rescue Committee and Act One Foundation. She is a board member on The Broadway League Board of Governors, Childsplay and Creative Capital.
Arts and Culture Leadership Award: Linda Herold, President, Herold Enterprise
Linda Herold is the founder of three professional organizations: Women of Scottsdale, West Valley Women and Central Phoenix Women. She is the founder of The Society of Chairs Dinner, an annual event recognizing nonprofit leaders and their volunteer chairs. Herold has documented the history of Valley philanthropy, culture, and society through various publications including frontdoors Lifestyle News, Arizona Republic’s AZ Style, and Arizona Corridors Magazine. Herold supports many civic and cultural organizations and is an active member of Charter 100, ASU Women & Philanthropy, Fashion Group International, Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona Costume Institute, The Musical Instrument Museum and more. In 2014, she launched Herold Studio and is engaged in artistic pursuits.
Non-Profit Leadership Award: Ethel Luzario, CEO and President of The 3000 Club
Ethel Luzario’s experience working for international organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme, was instrumental in her role as the Co-Founder, President and CEO of The 3000 Club (T3C). T3C’s mission is to provide life saving fresh fruits and vegetables to impoverished families. T3C’s Market On the Move (MOM) program has impacted people’s lives by donating millions of pounds of produce to more than two million families. The organization has expanded its Phoenix operation with a newly acquired 14,000 plus sq. ft., office/warehouse in Tucson. American Medical Aid, which recovers unused medical supplies, nutritional supplements, educational materials, personal care products and equipment, has been expanded to provide disaster relief items as well. When Category 5 Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines last November, the organization shipped five containers of combined medical and disaster relief items to the victims. The program has helped provide medical resources to underserved populations in the US, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti and its international chapter in the Philippines.
Spiritual Leadership Award: Rev. Ozetta Kirby, Pastor, Holy Trinity Community AME Church
Rev. Ozetta Kirby is a Kentucky native and former educator who received her call to preach in 1993. She was ordained as an Itinerant Deacon in 1996, and in 1998, ordained as an Itinerant Elder. In 2002, she joined Holy Trinity Community AME Church in Mesa and four years later was appointed Senior Pastor. She served as East Valley NAACP First Vice President for six years and chairs their annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet. Her vision is to build a new church on the current site, so she will be able to minister to the educational, psychological, spiritual, emotional, cultural and health needs of those living in the community and beyond.
Educational Leadership Award: Trish McCarty, Corporate Board Chair/President, StarShine Academy
Trish McCarty led the construction of an EcoVillage that features an Elders Wisdom Center, a preschool, StarShine Quintessential Institute and Teacher Training College, a wellness center, an Innovation Center, a state-of-the-art theater and sports center in downtown Phoenix. The Starshine Quintessential Institute provides research for interactive technologies, seminars and tools to enhance learning and provide resources for leadership for practicing teachers, students and parents. McCarty also created StarShine Planet, which provides a world-class system of strategies and tools that support the complex business of K-12 schools and educating children. StarShine Academy International Schools has received several awards and recognitions, including being the Honorary Host for the annual Peace Art education project for The United Nations Global Teaching Project.
