ATLANTA (Monday, Jan. 29, 2024) HBCU All-Stars LLC has announced the official team names honoring the legendary HBCU and NBA playing careers of Rick Mahorn and Ben Wallace for the third annual HBCU All-Star Game featuring the nation’s top HBCU student-athletes and coaches from the MEAC, SWAC, CIAA, SIAC, Tennessee State, Hampton, North Carolina A&T State Universities.
We’re thrilled and truly grateful to unveil the distinguished team names for the upcoming HBCU All-Star Game in Phoenix, AZ. Join us in welcoming two of the all-time greats, former HBCU and NBA basketball legends Rick Mahorn, a graduate of Hampton University, and Ben Wallace, a graduate of Virginia Union University. Team Rick Mahorn will consist of the MEAC, SIAC, and Independent All-Stars and Coach of the Year in the MEAC and SIAC versus Team Ben Wallace featuring the SWAC, CIAA, and Independent All-Stars and Coach of the Year in the SWAC and CIAA. Get ready for a basketball extravaganza, that you will get to witness firsthand like never before! Save the date of Sunday, April 7, 2024, for an electrifying showcase of talent featuring the Best in Black College Basketball HBCU student-athletes and coaches at this year’s All-Star game at Grand Canyon University Global Credit Union Arena.
Team Rick Mahorn and Team Ben Wallace will lead their teams to new heights and compete for the exclusive HBCU All-Star Game Championship, bragging rights, and an unbelievable opportunity to cut down the nets at the end of the game.
About Rick Mahorn:
Rick Mahorn is an American former professional basketball player who played power forward and center for the Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons, Philadelphia 76ers, and the New Jersey Nets. Mahorn played college basketball at Hampton University. He was a three-time NAIA All-American and owned 18 school records. His number #44 was retired and hanging from the rafters at Hampton Convocation Center. Rick Mahorn has a plethora of awards and honors including but not limited to a National Championship with the Detroit Pistons, a two-time WNBA Champion with the Detroit Shock, and BIG3 championship as head coach of the Trilogy.
About Ben Wallace:
Ben Wallace is an American basketball executive and former professional who played most of his NBA career with the Detroit Pistons. Wallace played college basketball at Virginia Union University in the CIAA and was first team Division II All-American. He won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four times, made two NBA Finals appearances, and won a national championship with the Detroit Pistons. Ben Wallace was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and currently serves as the basketball operations/team engagement advisor for the Pistons.
According to Mahorn, “It’s an honor and a pleasure to be represented as a former player of an HBCU but also to support players from HBCU. We have to learn from the past so we can represent the future of HBCUs. Go, Team Mahorn!”
HBCU All-Stars LLC will continue honoring the illustrious playing careers of Alvin Attles Jr., North Carolina A&T State University (CIAA), John Chaney, Bethune-Cookman University (SIAC), Leonard Eugene “Truck” Robinson, Tennessee State University (Independent), Robert Earl “Bob” Love, Southern University (SWAC), Zelmo “Big Z” Beaty, Prairie View A&M University (SWAC). Each of these amazing HBCU legends made his mark in this great game of basketball and reached the highest level of success in the NBA. We will recognize their impact on our HBCU basketball culture and host the third annual HBCU All-Star Game at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ.
The HBCU All-Star Game is far more than a basketball game. HBCU All-Stars LLC will stage the HBCU All-Star Game Experience, a week-long festival that will kick off the week on Tuesday, April 2, and conclude the following Tuesday after the Championship game, April 9. It will celebrate the HBCU All-Stars Experience and will be highlighted by an HBCU All-Stars College Admissions Fair, Community Outreach and Engagement, Pro Day Combine, Welcome Reception, Awards Ceremony, and Social Justice & Civil Rights panel discussion.
The HBCU All-Star Game will air live on CBS Television Network and be available to stream on Paramount+.
