Local Nonprofit to Host September Fundraiser to Stop Kidney Disease –
One Woman at a Time
CHANDLER, Ariz – September 2, 2015 –The Sisterhood Extravaganza a Women’s Empowerment Organization has partnered with the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona to bring awareness and education about untreated and undiagnosed systems that cause Kidney Disease.
The Sisterhood Extravaganza “Women in Green” fundraiser benefitting the National Kidney Foundation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015 from 4-7 p.m. at the home of Steve and Shelley Callahan, located at 3334 E. Birchwood Place in Chandler. This event is designed to bring awareness and education to the community about the impact of kidney disease and the importance of organ donation and transplantation. Shelley Callahan is a 19-year kidney transplant survivor and she will share her story as one of the event’s featured speakers.
Kidney disease affects one in three American adults and often has no symptoms and can go unnoticed until it is very advanced. According to the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona’s, while the main risk factors are diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and family history of the aforementioned factors, additional at-risk factors include:
- African American, Native American, Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander heritage
- Age 60 or older
- Obesity
- Lupus, other autoimmune disorders
- Chronic urinary tract infections
- Kidney stones
“It is our hope that we can provide much needed education and awareness to the severity of kidney disease and how important it is to get screened,” said Pat Gillum, founder of the Sisterhood Extravaganza. “Through the impact stories of our survivors and the information that will be provided by our physicians speakers, we hope to encourage our participants to get screened and suggest that their family and friends do the same.”
